The Town
The town is a fairly quiet laid-back place, with sandy paths instead of sidewalks, which peter out into dirt and gravel at the edges of town. However, the roar of low-flying military aircraft , the thunderous noise swelling up when you least expect it, and lasting for about ten seconds at a time, frequently punctuates the stillness. There are few sights to occupy your visit here, but if you're here in late July or early August the Labrador Canoe Regatta is the area's most important festival; the hectic, carnival-like event is held on a weekend and features canoe races, musical performances and pavilions serving traditional food. There are also two museums: the Northern Lights Military Museum , 170 Hamilton River Rd (Mon-Wed & Sat 9am-5.30pm, Thurs & Fri 9am-9pm; free), an eclectic collection of military memorabilia, stuffed wildlife displays and model trains; and the Labrador Military Museum , in a large hangar on C Street on the base (June-Aug Mon-Fri 10am-5pm, Sat & Sun 2-4pm; Sept-May by appointment; tel 896-6900 ext 2177), where the history of the British, American, Dutch and German - as well as Canadian - military presence is documented through displays such as flags, insignia and radar apparatus. Particularly poignant are the references to the all-too-frequent fatal air crashes that have occurred here in the past forty years.
