Getting Around
With the exception of the rail line that terminates at Schefferville, there is no land-based public transport in Labrador, and the unpaved 526-kilometre road linking Happy Valley-Goose Bay to Labrador City via Churchill Falls can only be used with ease in summer and takes, on average, ten hours to traverse. (From mid-May to mid-June, when there's the greatest chance of rain and the road becomes muddy, the Happy Valley-Goose Bay to Churchill Falls section is closed altogether.) The only other road is the 81-kilometre Route 510, which runs north from Blanc-Sablon in Quebec to Red Bay. For nondrivers, or for those who want to reach the far-off outposts, there are internal flights run by Air Labrador in Happy Valley-Goose Bay (tel 896-3387); the flight to Nain (daily except Sat) costs $437 return. Alternatively, but more expensive, is the coastal service of the Northern Ranger steamship .
