Getting There
Labrador has airports at Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Wabush and Churchill Falls, with regular flights by Air Nova (tel 726-7880 or 1-800/776-3000) and Air Labrador (tel 753-5593 or 1-800/563-3042) from Newfoundland. Expect to pay $610 for a return Quebec City-Wabush flight and $690 for a return Montreal-Wabush flight; it's half that for a flight from St John's and Deer Lake in Newfoundland. Less expensive are the ferries from Newfoundland. Labrador Marine runs a service from St Barbe, about 80km north of Port au Choix, across the Strait of Belle Isle to Blanc-Sablon in Quebec, on the southern border of Labrador (May-Dec 1-3 daily; 1hr 30min; adult $18 return, car $37 return; tel 877-2222 or 1-800/563-6353). To get to the heart of Labrador, Coastal Labrador Marine runs the Sir Robert Bond from Lewisporte in Newfoundland to Happy Valley-Goose Bay (mid-June to mid-Sept 2 weekly; 33hr; adults $97 one-way, cars $160, single cabins $37.50 per night, doubles $75; tel 1-800/563-6353). The Viking Trail Association (July to mid-Oct; tel 454-2332 or 1-800/563-6353, www.vikingtrail.org ) in conjunction with the provincial government, operates a foot-passenger steamship, the Northern Ranger , from St Anthony to numerous coastal settlements in Labrador. Sailing on ten designated days, it takes twelve days to complete a return journey from St Anthony to Nain, and it's possible to travel just a segment of the journey; rates are 25c per nautical mile plus the cost of a bunk in a cabin, which starts at $27.50 per night; for your own double cabin, reckon on $77 per night. The 416-kilometre rail line that links Sept-Iles in Quebec with Labrador City and Schefferville is primarily an industrial link, but there is limited space for passengers and the journey is an exhilarating ride over high bridges, through dense forest and stunted tundra, past seventy-metre-high waterfalls, deep gorges and rocky mountains - a special dome car allows passengers to appreciate the awesome views. Trains for Labrador City leave Sept-Iles every Tuesday at 7pm and Thursday at 9am, and take around eight hours ($115 return); trains run to Schefferville from Sept-Iles on Thursday at 9am (11hr; $156 return). Contact the Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway (tel 709/944-8205 or 418/968-7805) for reservations. It's possible to drive to Labrador from Quebec via the 580-kilometre Route 389 from Baie-Comeau to Labrador City and Wabush; the road is partly paved and partly gravel and has fuel, food and accommodation services along much of its length. There are rumours of a planned bus service - contact the station in Baie-Comeau for the latest (tel 418/296-2593).
