Villages such as L'Anse-au-Loup, Capstan Island and West St Modeste are the descendants of the fishing camps that huddled against eastern Labrador's cliffs. The only sights that might detain you are the 7500-year-old burial mound of a 12-year-old Indian boy at L'Anse-Amour, which is the oldest-known funeral monument in North America; a 33-metre mid-nineteenth-century lighthouse at Point Amour, one of the tallest lighthouses in Atlantic Canada (June-Oct daily 10am-5.30pm; $2.50); and the Labrador Straits Museum (July to mid-Sept daily 10am-6pm; $2) between Forteau and L'Anse-au-Loup, which traces the area's history, with particular emphasis on the important contributions made by Labrador women. Every year in mid-August Forteau plays host to the annual Bakeapple Folk Festival. Contact the Gateway to the Straits Visitor Centre (tel 931-2013) for more information on the festival and an update on accommodations in the area. There are also several places to stay along this stretch of the 510: the Beachside Hospitality Home (tel 931-2662, 931-2053 or 1-877/663-8999; $40-60) and the Northern Light Inn (tel 931-2332 or toll-free in Atlantic provinces 1-800/563-3188, www.labradorstraits.nf .ca/nli.html ; $60-80/$80-100) are both in L'Anse-au-Clair, only 8km from the ferry terminal; Grenfell Louie A Hall B&B (tel 931-2916, www3.nf.sympatico.ca/peggy.hancock ; $40-60) and the Seaview Motel and Cabins (tel 931-2840, fax 931-2842; $60-80) are in Forteau, the next settlement northeast; the Lighthouse Cove B&B (tel 927-5690; up to $40) is in nearby L'Anse Amour; Barney's Bed & Breakfast (tel 927-5634, fax 927-5609; $40-60) is in L'Anse-au-Loup, 3km northeast of Forteau; and the Oceanview Resort (tel 927-5288, fax 927-5894, www .seascape.com/labrador ; $60-80), is in West St Modeste, a few kilometers north of L'Anse-au-Loup.
