Prince Edward Island Getting To The Island

Getting To The Island

There are regular domestic flights to Charlottetown airport from most cities in eastern Canada, but the majority of visitors arrive via the 13km-long Confederation Bridge spanning the Northumberland Strait between New Brunswick's Cape Tormentine and Borden, 60km west of Charlottetown. There's a toll of $36.25 per vehicle for using the bridge and this is collected on the way off the island. Cycling is a popular pastime on PEI, but cyclists still aren't allowed on the bridge; instead, they are transported across in a free shuttle bus within two hours of arrival - advance reservations are not accepted. The bridge is used by the twice-daily SMT bus service connecting Fredericton or Saint John in New Brunswick, with Charlottetown via Moncton.

You can also reach the island by ferry : Northumberland Ferries take 75 minutes to cross from Caribou , Nova Scotia, to Wood Islands , 61km east of Charlottetown ($49 return for car and passengers; tel 902/566-3838 or 1-888/249-7245, www.nfl-bay.com ). Again, fares are collected when you leave the island, but not when you arrive. Ferries run roughly every one and a half hours from July to September and every three hours in May, June, October, November and early December. There's no ferry from late December to April. Ferries operate on a first-come, first-served basis and queues are common in high

A second ferry does the five-hour hop between Cap-aux-Meules on the Magdalen Islands (Iles-de-la-Madeleine) and Souris , 81km northeast of Charlottetown (Feb & March no ferries; summer & autumn 6-10 weekly; winter 3-5 weekly; $36 single, $68 per car; call 902/687-2181 in Souris for schedules; reservations on tel 418/986-3278 or 1-888/986-3278, www.ilesdelamadeleine.com ).
