Eating, Drinking and Nightlife
Charlottetown has a reasonable range of restaurants - quite enough to keep you going for a day or two - and several are excellent. The best are downtown, with particular concentrations along Victoria Row, beside the Confederation Centre and on Sydney Street at Queen. The best cafes and bars are here too - nothing amazingly exciting perhaps, but still amenable, easy-going places to enjoy a drink. Note also that in several cases, restaurants share their premises with bars - food below and booze up above. As for the performing arts , the programme of events at the Confederation Centre of the Arts (tel 566-4648 or 1-800/565-0278, www.confederationcentre.com ) encompasses an extensive variety of acts, from rock and jazz through to comedians, magicians, theatre, opera and ballet. The centre is also the home of the main show of the annual Charlottetown Festival (June to mid-Oct), which - surprise, surprise - is a musical adaptation of Anne of Green Gables (tickets $16-34). The musical has been running for years, though modifications are made every year to freshen it up. During festival time in particular, Charlottetown also offers all sorts of comedy revues and shows both indoors and out. The Buzz , a free monthly newssheet available all over town and at the tourist office, carries comprehensive listings and reviews.
