Well off the beaten track, 65km west of Liverpool, the sleepy fishing village of LOCKEPORT sits on a tiny island that's reached across a 1.5-kilometre-long causeway, fringed by the white sands of Crescent Beach . The beach is never crowded, the sea is deep and clear, and the village features a row of five contrasting houses built by the prosperous Locke family over a forty-year period in the nineteenth century. It's a lovely, relaxing spot, where nothing much seems to happen except for the comings and goings of the odd fishing smack. It also boasts one of the most delightful B&Bs on the coast in Seventeen South , 17 South St (tel 656-2512, shorebb@auracom.com ; $60-80), a tastefully modernized Cape Cod house with three guestrooms perched on a wooded knoll in sight of the seashore, not far from the harbour. If it's full, the seasonal tourist office (tel 656-3123), in the brash building at the end of the causeway, has details of a few other local B&Bs and beachside cottages. Lockeport has a good restaurant too, in Locke's Island Dining , 18 North St.
