In 1847, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow chose GRAND PRE , 5km east of Wolfville along Hwy 1, as the setting for his epic poem Evangeline - A Tale of Acadie , which dramatized the Acadian deportations through the star-crossed love of Evangeline for her Gabriel. Horribly sentimental and extremely popular, the poem turned the destruction of this particular community into a symbol of Acadian suffering and British callousness. However, the Grand Pre National Historic Site (mid-May to Oct daily 9am-6pm; free), located amidst the dykelands of the Minas Basin, is - with its trim lawns, planted trees and statues of Longfellow and Evangeline - a strangely antiseptic tribute. The chapel, which stands on the site of the original church, has a modest Acadian display, but there's nothing very insightful and the Acadian blacksmith's shop and garden at the end of the site seem very much an afterthought.
