The rugged, hook-shaped peninsula north of Wolfville encompasses the dramatic scenery of Cape Split and of Cape Blomidon , which, local legend has it, takes its name from the sailors' phrase "Blow me down". To reach the peninsula from Wolfville, take Hwy 1 west for a couple of kilometres and then turn north at the sign along Hwy 358 for the 10-kilometre drive to CANNING , where there's a choice of routes depending on the cape you're aiming for. One road - a 13km-long minor road - leads down to Blomidon Provincial Park , a narrow slice of seashore where steep sea cliffs back onto a lush, coastal forest of maple, birch, fir and beech, laced by some 14km of footpath. It is a lovely spot and the park has a popular, shaded campsite (tel 582-7319; mid-June to mid-Oct) - but Cape Split is much wilder and bleaker. To get there, take Hwy 358 north from Canning. The road climbs steeply for the first 4km until it reaches the highest point of the peninsula, the Look-off , where the view over the Annapolis Valley and the Minas Basin is truly spectacular. There's a cafe here and behind it is the Look-off Campground (tel 582-3022; mid-May to mid-Oct), one of the best-sited in the province. From the Look-off, it's a further 17km to the end of the road, where one of the region's most popular and not-too-difficult hiking trails leads the 7km to the tip of Cape Split . Reckon on two hours each way and be sure to pick up trail information and maps at Wolfville tourist office before you set out. The trail starts by threading up through thick forest beneath towering cliffs and passes heavily eroded rock formations before emerging onto a small open area, from where there are wondrous views across the Bay of Fundy.
