Running northeast of Fredericton, Hwy 8 traverses the Miramichi River Valley , passing endless stands of timber en route to the City of Miramichi , an amalgamation of the six tiny logging ports that flank the mouth of the river - and amongst which Newcastle is easily the most diverting. The 180-kilometre trip takes three to four hours, longer if you pause at the one sight of any real interest, the Woodmen's Museum in Boiestown . The river valley is, however, much more famous for its salmon fishing, which draws anglers from all over the world. The season begins anywhere between April and July, depending on the waters to be fished, and every angler has to buy a licence, with nonresidents charged between $30 and $110. A veritable raft of regulations controls the sport but any local tourist office will have the details. The other big deal hereabouts is the Miramichi Folksong Festival (tel 622-1780), held over five days in early August in Miramichi City and generally reckoned to be one of the best of its kind, with fiddle music its forte. Look out for two big local names, Ned Landry and Winston Crawford. SMT buses ply Hwy 8 once daily, and at Chatham (part of Miramichi City) there are connecting services north to Montreal and south to Moncton.
