The Legislative Assembly Building (guided tours June-Aug daily 9am-6pm; Sept-May Mon-Fri 9am-4pm; free), the home of New Brunswick's parliament, stands opposite the art gallery, its robust and imposing exterior topped by a ponderous tower and cupola. The interior holds a sumptuously decorated Assembly Chamber, adorned with portraits of George III and Queen Charlotte by Joshua Reynolds, as well as a splendid oak and cherry spiral staircase leading to the chamber's visitors' gallery. The Reynolds were rescued from the previous parliament building, which burnt down in 1880. The Legislature occupies the grandest building in Fredericton, but the nearby Christ Church Cathedral , King Street and Church (mid-June to Aug Mon-Fri 9am-6pm, Sat 10am-5pm, Sun 1-5pm; Sept to mid-June Mon-Sat 9am-4pm; free guided tours from mid-June to Aug), comes a close second. A mid-Victorian copy of the fifteenth-century parish church of Snettisham, in Norfolk, England, it's distinguished by the elegance of its tapering spire and the intricate grace of its red-pine hammerbeam ceiling. The church also marks the beginning of the smartest part of town, whose leafy streets, lined by handsome Victorian mansions complete with gingerbread scrollwork and expansive verandas, stretch south towards tiny Queen Square Park . Near here too - at the east end of Brunswick Street - the old railway bridge has been pedestrianized and is easily the nicest way to cross the Saint John River. The bridge is actually part of a system of hiking trails that loops through and around Fredericton focused on the river. There are several jetties dotted along the trails and in the summertime passenger boats ($2 per trip, $3 return; tel 447-7494) link them several times daily, except in bad weather. Maps of the hiking trails and boat timetables are available from the tourist office.
