The Acadian Peninsula , which protrudes some 130km into the Gulf of St Lawrence in the northeast corner of New Brunswick, is promoted as a part of the province where the twentieth century has yet to gain a foothold. For the Acadians who fled here to avoid the deportations, the isolation was a life-saver, and more than anywhere else in the Maritimes this is where they have maintained their traditional way of life, based on fishing and marshland farming - though frankly there's precious little actually to see: the countryside is uniformly dull and the ribbon villages are hardly enticing. The mundane port of Caraquet , on the north shore, serves as the peninsula's cultural focus and is the best base for a visit to the replica Village Historique Acadien , the one sight of any note.
