North of Saskatoon you have a choice of two routes. Following the Yellowhead northwest towards Edmonton, you'll come to the Battlefords , consisting of grimy and impoverished North Battleford and, on the opposite bank of the North Saskatchewan River, the trim riverside streets and refurbished Mountie stockade of Battleford . Due north of Saskatoon, the road shadows the South Saskatchewan River on its way to the town of Prince Albert, a distance of 140km, passing the Batoche National Historic Site , where the Metis rebellion of 1885 reached its disastrous climax . Further north still, the lakes and wooded hills of Prince Albert National Park are among the region's finest, with innumerable canoe and hiking routes into the wilderness. Central Saskatchewan's public transport is poor, but there are reasonably regular buses between the major towns and a once-daily summertime service to Waskesiu Lake.
