The wild rivers that drain into Hudson Bay constitute some of the most challenging canoe routes in Canada, their long stretches of white water demanding considerable planning, experience and skill. One of the more popular is the Seal River , whose principal canoe route begins at the tiny Chipewyan village of Tadoule, and then passes through regions of boreal forest and tundra before emptying into Hudson Bay, just 45km west of Churchill. In the summer the estuary is a gathering place for several thousand beluga whales, an amazing sight to witness. There's float-plane transportation to the start of the canoe route and from the mouth of the river at the end, which can take between two and four weeks to reach. For details, contact Dymond Air Services, 23 Selkirk St, Churchill (tel 675-8875). For something a bit shorter, you can stay at the Seal River Heritage Lodge (tel 675-8875 or 1-888/326-7325) on a three-day ($1450) or six-day package ($2300) including all meals, services of a guide, whale-watching expeditions, canoeing trips and wildlife tours.
