Situated 400km north of Dauphin on Hwy 10, on the southern bank of the Saskatchewan River, THE PAS - a former fur-trading and missionary centre founded in 1750 - is a town with no specific sights. However, it does host the annual Northern Manitoba Trappers' Festival in the third week of February - four days of revelling that include competitions in a number of traditional pioneer skills, like tree-felling, trap-setting, ice-fishing and muskrat-skinning, with the highlight being the World Championship Sled Dog Races and its 50km mushes. If you're in town in mid-August, you can join in the aboriginal celebrations honouring the Cree people during Opasquiak Indian Days . The town's bus and train stations are right in the centre, a few minutes' walk from the Municipal Offices (Mon-Fri 9am-1pm; tel 623-7256), at 324 Ross Ave, which will provide basic tourist information. There's also a tourist booth (June-Aug daily 9am-5pm) at the foot of Edwards Avenue, beside the tiny Devon Park and Kinsmen Kampground (tel 623-2233; $11-18; May-Sept) and close to two motels on Gordon Avenue: the Golden Arrow at no. 1313 (tel 623-5451, fax 623-5457; up to $40) and the La Verendrye at no. 1326 (tel 623-3431; $40-60/$60-80); there's also the Rupert House Hotel (tel 623-3201, fax 623-1651; up to $40/$40-60) and the three-star Kikiwak Inn (tel 623-1800 or 1-888/545-4925, fax 623-1812; $60-80/$80-100). Back in the centre, near the train station, the comfortable Wescana Inn , at 439 Fischer Ave (tel 623-5446, fax 623-3383; $60-80), is also a good place to eat .
