Grass River Provincial Park is made up of several thousand square kilometres of evergreen forest, lake and river interspersed by the granite outcrops of the Canadian Shield. It's noted for its canoe routes , the most popular of which runs 180km from the Cranberry Lakes, on the park's western perimeter, to its eastern boundary, where the southern tip of Tramping Lake is located near Hwy 39. It's an excursion of about ten days - all of the route's portages are short and fairly easy and there are lots of basic campsites on the way. At the start of the canoe route, the first of the three Cranberry Lakes is situated close to CRANBERRY PORTAGE , a straggling township on Hwy 10, which runs along the western edge of the park. The settlement has its own park information kiosk ; a small campsite ($10) 1km west of Hwy 10 (tel 472-3219, fax 472-3115; $18; mid-May to Sept) with its own beach; a couple of hotels , including the Northern Inn (tel 472-3231; up to $40), 112 Portage Rd; and a handful of holiday lodges (May-Oct only) along its lakeshore, such as the Viking Lodge (tel & fax 472-3337; $80-100) and the Caribou Lodge (tel 472-3351, fax 472-3556; $80-100). Most of the lodges have boat and canoe rentals, and can arrange guided trips and flights to the remoter lakes. There are other access points to Grass River Park along Hwy 39, which runs along its southern boundary. This hundred-kilometre stretch of road passes three small summer campsites (all $10) - Gyles (24km east of Hwy 10), Iskwasum (40km) and Reed Lake (56km) - where park entry points lead to circular canoe trips that can be accomplished within one day. A worthwhile side-trip can be made from the park to Wekusko Falls , about 35km beyond the east boundary of the park along Hwy 39 and then south along a short stretch of gravel road (Hwy 596). Here the Mitishto River drops dramatically in a series of falls and rapids. You can view the spectacle from two suspension footbridges or along the walking trails below.
