East of town , a road runs behind the shoreline past a series of rather eccentric attractions. Near the airport, the polar bear "prison" is a large hangar-like compound where dangerous bears are kept until they can be released safely. The problem is that some of the beasts wander into town in search of food and, although most can be scared off quite easily, a handful return. These more persistent specimens are shot with tranquillizers and transported to the compound. It's a necessary precaution, as polar bears can run and swim faster than humans and there are occasional horror stories, such as the owner of a fire-damaged house returning to empty his freezer, only to be trapped and killed by a bear. Repeat bear offenders are given three chances, after which they are humanely destroyed.
