The Aboriginal Peoples
Before the Europeans arrived, the aboriginal peoples - numbering around 300,000 - were divided into three main language groups: Algonkian, Athapascan (principally in the north and west) and Inuktitut (Inuit). Within these groups existed a multitude of cultures. None of these people had a written language, the wheel was unknown to them and their largest draught animal, prior to the introduction of the horse, was the dog. However, over the centuries, each of the tribes developed techniques that enabled them to cope with the problems of survival posed by their environments
