Highway 16 , or the Yellowhead Highway, is, as Edmonton's Chamber of Commerce likes to call it, "the other Trans-Canada Highway"; the second and less-travelled transcontinental route and - by comparison to the Calgary-Banff route - a longer way of making for the Rocky Mountain national parks. For the first three hours or so it's dull going, but the scenery picks up considerably for the last hour through the eastern margins of the Jasper National Park . Jasper town lies 357km west of Edmonton on the highway, an easy journey by car, bus (4-5 daily; $49.49) or train , whose tracks run parallel to the highway for much of the route (Mon, Thurs & Sat; $125). Numerous campsites and motels service the road at regular intervals, the main concentrations being at Edson , halfway to Jasper, and Hinton . Edson's ten or so motels are all much of a muchness if you're breaking your journey, the cheapest of those you'd want to stay in being the Summit Motel , 4818-4th Ave (tel 723-6199; $40-60). Two nearby sites provide camping: the Lions Club Campground (tel 723-3169; $15; May-Sept) on the east side of town, and the Willmore Recreation Park (tel 723-4401; $10; May-Oct), 6km south on 63rd Street. The tourist office is in RCMP Centennial Park, 5433 3rd Ave (summer daily 8am-6pm; rest of the year Mon-Fri 9am-5pm; tel 723-3339). For food , try Ernie O's , 4320 2nd Ave (tel 723-3600), good for breakfast, or the smarter Mountain Pizza & Steakhouse , 5102 4th Ave (tel 723-3900).
