Modern MANNING , 50km north of Peace River, is the last sizeable community and services centre for another 200km, making its pair of motels vital and often very busy as a result. The sixteen-unit Garden Court (tel 836-3399; $80-100) has kitchenettes and is smaller and a shade more expensive than the 42-unit Manning Motor Inn (tel 836-2801; $60-80). For the tiny nine-site municipal campsite (tel 836-3606; $10; May-Sept) on the Notikewin River, turn east at the summer-only infocentre (summer daily 9am-5pm; tel 836-3875) on the highway. Camping (25 sites) is also sometimes available on the Condy Meadows golf course (tel 836-2176), north of town on Hwy 35 - look for signs ($10). Only a couple of basic campsites and the odd wind-blown store disturb the peace north of Manning , though if you're camping it's as well to know you can expect the unwelcome nocturnal attention of bears in these parts. Official tenting spots are Notikewin Provincial (tel 554-1348; $9; May-Oct), 30km east of Hwy 35 on Hwy 692 - look for the junction 37km north of Manning, and the 49-site Twin Lakes Provincial Recreation Area (tel 554-1348; $9; May-Sept), a total of 65km north of Manning on Hwy 35.
