Alberta is hoping that the glittering new Remington-Alberta Carriage Centre (daily: mid-May to early Sept 9am-8pm; early Sept to mid-May 10am-5pm; $6.50, carriage rides June-Aug $3; tel 653-1000 or 653-5139) will attract visitors in droves. Although brilliantly executed, its appeal is perhaps more limited, centring on horse-drawn vehicles and evoking the atmosphere of their nineteenth-century heyday. The main hall boasts around sixty working carriages - the core of a private collection begun by Don Remington in the 1950s - and around 140 in passive display, the exhibits cleverly integrated with 25 "stories" that place the carriages in their social and cultural context. Additionally there's the chance to ride the carriages (usually for free), see working stables and admire the magnificent Quarters and Clydesdales that make up the centre's horse herd. Guides are often in period dress, and you can watch craftspeople in the process of building and renovating various carriages. Free guided tours run regularly around the site. The centre lies immediately south of Cardston at 623 Main St (across the river from the town centre), just off Hwy 2 about 50km south of Fort Macleod, and is handily placed for Waterton Lakes National Park.
