FORT MACLEOD catches traffic coming up from the States and down from Calgary on Hwy 2, which eases around the town centre via the largely rebuilt wooden palisade of the Fort Museum at 219 25th St (May, June & Sept to mid-Oct daily 9am-5pm; July & Aug daily 9am-8pm; mid-Oct to Dec 23 & March-April Mon-Fri 9am-5pm; $5; tel 553-4703). One for die-hard Mountie fans, this was the first fort established in Canada's Wild West by the North West Mounted Police, who got lost after being dispatched to raid Fort Whoop-Up in Lethbridge, allowing the whiskey traders to flee; finding Whoop-Up empty, they continued west under Colonel James Macleod to establish a permanent barracks here on Oldman Island on the river in 1874. The RCMP "musical ride", a display of precision riding, is performed four times daily in July and August by students in replica dress. Two daily buses serve the town from Lethbridge and between three and five from Calgary, the latter continuing west to Cranbrook, Nelson and eventually to Vancouver in British Columbia. The depot's at 2302 2nd Ave (tel 553-3383). The tourist office is at the east end of town on 24th Street (mid-May to Aug daily 9am-8pm; tel 553-4955). The town has nine more or less similarly priced motels , the most central being the Fort Motel on Main Street (tel 553-3606; $40-60). Top choice is the Sunset Motel (tel 553-4448 or 1-888/554-2784; $80-100), located on Hwy 3 at the western entrance to town. All motels fill up quickly in summer, so arrive early or call ahead.
