A trip to Canada's largest dam may sound dull, but the Revelstoke Dam (daily: mid-March to mid-June & early Sept to late Oct 9am-5pm; mid-June to early Sept 8am-8pm; free; tel 250/837-6515) makes an interesting outing. Four kilometres north of the town on Hwy 23, the 175-metre-tall barrier holds back the waters of the Columbia River, around 500km from its source. Its sleek, space-age visitor centre offers a two-hour self-guided tour, which omits to tell you that insufficient mapping during the construction caused a landslide that threatened to swamp Revelstoke: millions had to be spent or it would have been curtains for the town. The boring bits of the tour can be skipped in favour of a lift to the top for a great view of the dam and surrounding valley.
