The town's superb national park visitor centre is at 500 Connaught Drive - 50m east of the station, back from the road on the left in the open grassy area (mid-May to mid-June daily 8am-5pm; mid-June to early Sept daily 8am-7pm; early Sept to mid-May Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat & Sun 8am-5pm; tel 852-6176, www.parkscanada.pch.gc.ca/jasper ). This is for park-related and campsite information only. For accommodation, contact the Chamber of Commerce office . Apply at the park office for compulsory national park permits ($5 daily, $35 annual ) backcountry wilderness permits ($6) and to register for backpacking trails. If you're hiking seriously you might also want to contact the park's Trail Office (May-Oct; tel 852-6177). Out of season, apply to the Park Administration Office located upstairs in the VIA Rail-bus terminal complex (Mon-Fri 8am-4.30pm; tel 852-6162 or 852-6220). The Park Warden Office is 1km away in the Industrial Area off the east side of Hwy 93a as you head towards the junction with Hwy 16 (Mon-Fri 8am-4.30pm; tel 852-6155). For weather reports, call Environment Canada (tel 852-3185). The centre also has a shop (good for maps ) run by the Friends of Jasper (tel 852-4767), who offer a couple of guided walks : Jasper - A Walk in the Past (daily from the visitor centre at 7.30pm June-Sept 6, 6.30pm Sept 6-30), which delves into the history of the town, and Pocahontas - A Walk in the Past (daily from car park at the bottom of Miette Hot Springs Rd July-Aug at 2pm), which looks at some of the legends and stories of the region. You should register at the centre for both; payment by donation. Other popular Friends' activities include performances at the Whistler's Campground Theatre (daily: 10pm July to mid-Aug, 9pm mid-Aug to Sept) and wildlife talks at the Wabasso Campground Campfire Circle (July-Sept Sat 9pm). For information on the town of Jasper, and accommodation in particular, contact the Jasper Chamber of Commerce infocentre behind the park office about 100m east on Patricia Street at no. 409 (June to early Sept daily 9am-7pm; rest of the year Mon-Fri 9am-5pm; tel 852-3858). The local public library on Elm Avenue (Mon-Thurs 2-5pm & 7-9pm, Fri 2-5pm, Sat 10am-3pm; tel 852-3652) has a huge number of books on the park, but there's no decent bookshop in town. The post office is at 502 Patricia St; the hospital at 518 Robson St (tel 852-3344). For the police , call 852-4848. For Internet access , use the terminals at the Soft Rock Internet Cafe , 633 Connaught Drive (tel 852-5850).
