The Llyn Travel Itinerary

Travel Guide for The Llyn & Travel Itinerary

The Llyn takes its name from an Irish word for peninsula - aptly so, for this most westerly part of North Wales, which, until the fifth century, had a significant Irish population. The cliff- and cove-lined finger of land juts out south and west, separating Cardigan and Caernarfon bays, its hills tapering away along the ancient route to Aberdaron, where pilgrims sailed for Ynys Enlli (Bardsey Island). Today, it's the beaches that lure people to the south coast family resorts of Cricieth, Pwllheli and Abersoch , and unless you want to rent windsurfers or canoes, it's preferable to press on along the narrow roads that dawdle down towards Aberdaron. Not even Snowdonia can match the remoteness of the tip of the Llyn, and nowhere in Wales is more staunchly Welsh: road signs are still bilingual but the English is frequently obliterated; Stryd Fawr is used instead of High Street, and in most local shops you'll only hear Welsh spoken.

The Llyn is reached through one of the two gateway towns, Porthmadog and Caernarfon, linked by the A487, an effective boundary between Snowdonia proper and the peninsula's gentler contours. Porthmadog ,

nestling into the crook of the elbow where the Cambrian coast takes a sharp left turn, is of interest for its proximity to the private "dream village" of Portmeirion , reached on Wales's finest narrow-gauge train line, the Ffestiniog Railway . The Llyn's northern coast comes to an abrupt end at the mouth of the Menai Strait, guarded by the magnificent fortress which forms the centrepiece of Caernarfon , a good base for both the Llyn and central Snowdonia.
