Llangollen, along with the smaller town of Bala, grew up partly as a market centre, but also served the needs of cattle drovers who used the passage carved by the River Dee (Afon Dyfrdwy) through the hills - the easiest route from the fattening grounds of northwest Wales to the markets in England. Long before rail and road transport pushed the dwindling numbers of drovers out of business at the end of the nineteenth century, they had already been joined by early tourists. Most made straight for Llangollen , where the ruins of both a Welsh castle and a Cistercian abbey lent a gaunt Romantic charm to a dramatic gorge naturally blessed with surging rapids. The arrival of the railway,
in the middle of the nineteenth century, made Llangollen a firm favourite with tourists from the mill towns of northwest England. The line closed in the 1960s, but Bala has fought neglect to become one of Wales' top watersports venues, a mecca for windsurfing and white-water kayaking. Between Llangollen and the English border, the Dee is joined by one of its major tributaries, the Ceiriog, which flows down its peaceful valley to the Marcher fortress of Chirk Castle .
