An ancient borough and fomer port at the lowest bridging point of the Teifi Estuary, CARDIGAN (Aberteifi) was founded by the Norman lord Roger de Montgomery around its castle in 1093. From the castle mound by the bridge, Bridge Street sweeps through High Street to the turreted oddity of the Guildhall , with the Welsh flag skewered adamantly to its grey frontage. Through the Guildhall courtyard is the town's covered market , a typically eclectic mix of fresh food, local crafts and secondhand stalls. Across the bridge from the town centre, the Cardigan Heritage Centre (March-Oct daily 10am-5pm; call 01239/614404 for winter hours; GBP2), housed in an old granary, tells the story of the port's rise and fall.
The helpful tourist office (June-Aug daily 10am-6pm; Sept-May Mon-Sat 10am-5pm; tel 01239/613230) is in the foyer of Theatr Mwldan, Bath House Road. There's plenty of accommodation , with numerous B&Bs along the Gwbert Road, off North Road: the Brynhyfryd , at the town end (tel 01239/612861; GBP40-50), and the Garth , further up Gwbert Road (tel 01239/613085; GBP40-50), are the best. On the High Street, the old-fashioned Black Lion pub (tel 01239/612532; GBP50-60) does good
B&B and evening meals. There's a YHA hostel four miles away at Poppit Sands, at the end of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path (tel 01239/612936; March-Oct); buses connect in July and August, but for the rest of the year they terminate at St Dogmael's, two miles short. For food , try the inexpensive Theatr Mwldan cafe or Jackets , 58 North Rd, which serves pizzas, potatoes, kebabs and pies. The best pub food is at the Eagle , at the southern end of the town bridge.
