South of Machynlleth is the county of Ceredigion , formerly known as Cardiganshire. Lying as it does between the two national parks of the Pembrokeshire Coast and Snowdonia, Ceredigion is often overlooked by visitors, but it shouldn't be. In many ways, it combines the best of both national parks - the stunning mountain scenery of southern Snowdonia with the little ports and sandy coves of Pembrokeshire, and all soaked in a relaxed, upbeat and firmly Welsh culture. The county's main town is ebullient Aberystwyth , a top spot for everything from serious study and exhibitions in the National Library to student-oriented raves and bar culture. The southern Ceredigion coast is broken by some spirited little ports: most notably Georgian Aberaeron , higgledy-piggledy New Quay and the old county town of Cardigan , where the River Teifi flows into the sea. Towns and sights inland along the Teifi are worth exploring, especially the mighty castle at Cilgerran and the charming little university town of Lampeter . Near the source of the Teifi is the atmospheric Strata Florida Abbey .
