Locarno is the eastern terminus of the dramatic Centovalli railway (ER, IR & SP free; www.centovalli.ch ), well worth putting aside half a day for. Clanky little trains run from beneath Locarno's station west into the impressive Centovalli - so named for its "hundred" side-valleys - most of the time sidewinding above ravine-like depths; sit on the left for the best views. After the border at Camedo (passport needed), trains roll on through rustic villages amid spectacular scenery before easing down into the Italian town of DOMODOSSOLA . Swiss express trains from here run west to Brig (for Zermatt), Geneva and Bern; Italian ones head south to Milan.
