From May 15 to October 20, 2002, four small lakeside towns north of Lausanne will host the Swiss National Expo 02 , planned as a showcase for cutting-edge interpretations of the culture and outlook of the country in the new millennium. It will be focused on five "arteplages", huge, futuristic-looking, ecologically sound, floating exhibition sites and performance venues, designed by leading architects on grandiose themes such as "nature and artificiality" or "power and freedom". Four arteplages will be moored (at Neuchatel and Yverdon , at either end of Lake Neuchatel, and at the bilingual towns of Murten/Morat and Biel/Bienne , each on their own neighbouring lake), and one will be mobile, trundling between the three connected lakes, all of them hosting exhibits that will run in conjunction with dozens of on-land shows and events. At the time of writing, it's still impossible to say exactly what you'll be faced with on the day, or whether the whole thing will be worth your hard-earned francs or not. Check online for the latest news ( www.expo.02.ch ). A three-day ticket, bought in advance and valid for all five arteplages, costs Sfr99 (Sfr120 after May 14); or you can buy a day-ticket for one arteplage for Sfr48, or an evening ticket for Sfr10. Included in the panoply of planned tourist services - cafes, restaurants, reception centres, and so on - are modular hotels offering basic accommodation.
