Most spectacular of the Alpine regions, the Bernese Oberland ( www.berneroberland.com ) is best known for a grand triple-peaked ridge - the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau (Ogre, Monk and Virgin), which crests 4000m. The excursion that is endlessly touted hereabouts is the rack-railway up to the Jungfraujoch , the highest train station in Europe at 3454m. The cable-car ride up to the Schilthorn (2970m) gets second billing, and is rejected by most visitors, but is in fact quicker, cheaper, offers a more scenic ride up, and has better mountain-top views. (Local cable-TV broadcasts continuous live pictures from both summits, to help plan a trip.) Most beautiful of the region's countryside is the Lauterbrunnen valley , overlooked by the resorts of Wengen and Murren which provide excellent winter skiing and summer hiking, as does Grindelwald , in its own valley slightly east. Interlaken is the main transport hub for the region, but the sheer volume of tourist traffic passing through the town can make it a less-than-restful place to stay. Tourist offices can provide details of the region's numerous mountain huts (generally open June-Sept), which exist to offer hikers a bed and simple comforts in the wilds of nature. Ski passes cost Sfr40/52 for a half-/full day in a single sector; or Sfr109 for a two-day universal pass (under-19s get a twenty percent discount).
