Five kilometres north of town three huge barrows , atmospheric royal burial mounds dating back to the sixth century, mark the original site of Uppsala, GAMLA UPPSALA - reached on frequent buses #2, #20 and #24 (#54 on Sun) from Dragarbrunnsgatan. This was a pagan settlement and a place of ancient sacrificial rites: every ninth year a festival demanded the death of nine men, hanged from a nearby tree until their corpses rotted. There is now a worthwhile Historical Visitor Centre (mid-May to mid-Aug daily 10am-5pm, early May & late Aug till 4pm, rest of year Sat & Sun noon-3pm only; gamlauppsala@raa.se ; 50kr) with exhibitions illustrating the origin of local myths from Roman times and Uppsala's era of greatness until the thirteenth century. The pagan temple where this took place is marked by the Christian Gamla Uppsala Kyrka (Mon-Fri 8.30am till dusk, Sat & Sun 10am till dusk), built when the Swedish kings first took baptism in the new faith. Look in for the faded wall paintings and the tomb of Celsius.
