Just a short way to the northeast of the city centre, on the mainly residential island of Lindingo , the Millesgarden (May-Sept daily 10am-5pm; Oct-April Tues-Sun noon-4pm; 80kr) is the outdoor sculpture garden of Carl Milles (1875-1955), one of Sweden's greatest sculptors. Arranged on a number of garden terraces carved from the steep cliffs, this is one of the most enticing visual attractions within easy reach of central Stockholm - to get there, take the T-bana to Ropsten and then go on by train one stop to Torvikstorg before walking down Herserudsvagen. Milles' animated, Classical figures perch precariously on pillars, overlooking the distant harbour, while the sculptor's former home contains his staggeringly rich collection of Greek and Roman antiquities. Try also to visit the harmonious royal palace of Drottningholm (May-Aug daily 10am-4.30pm; Sept daily noon-3.30pm; guided tours noon, 1pm & 2pm; 50kr), beautifully located on the shores of leafy Lovon island, 11km west of the centre. It's a lovely fifty-minute boat trip there (85kr return); ferries leave every thirty minutes from Stadshusbron to coincide with the opening times. You could also take the T-bana to Brommaplan and then bus #177, #301-323, #336 or #338 from there - a less thrilling ride, but free with the Stockholm Card. Modelled in a thoroughly French style, Drottningholm is perhaps the greatest achievement of the architects Tessin - father and son - and was begun in 1662 on the orders of King Karl X's widow, Eleonora. Good English notes are available to help you sort out the riot of Rococo decoration. Though it's an expensive extra, try not to miss the Court Theatre (tours May-Sept daily noon-4.30pm; 50kr) in the grounds, which dates from 1766. The original backdrops and stage machinery are still in place, complete with a display of the eighteenth-century special effects - wind and thunder machines, trapdoors and simulated lightning. If you've time to spare, the extensive palace grounds also yield the Chinese Pavilion (May-Aug daily 11am-4.30pm; 50kr), an eighteenth-century royal summer house and World Heritage Site.
