The rumours about good times on Gotland are rife. You'll hear that the short summer season really motors like nowhere else in Sweden, and it's hot and fun. Largely, these rumours are true: the island has a youthful feel as young, mobile Stockholmers desert the capital for a boisterous summer on its beaches. But it's not all just brochure fodder. The island was an important trading post during Viking times, and later a powerbase of the Hanseatic League. The capital Visby became one of the great cities of medieval Europe, and no other part of Scandinavia has such a concentration of unspoilt medieval country churches. Numerous ferries to Gotland, operated by Destination Gotland, run from Nynashamn and Oskarshamn, but are packed in summer, so try to plan ahead. The main operator is Destination Gotland (tel 0498/20 10 20; Stockholm office tel 08/20 10 20, www.destinationgotland.se ). Otherwise, Gotland City at Kungsgatan 57 in Stockholm (tel 08/406 15 00, www.gotlandcity.se) can provide plenty of information and sell advance tickets. One-way fares cost 145kr to 465kr June to mid-August, and students are entitled to a discount from 60kr to 170kr. Under-26s may find flying a competitive option, with return fares from 200kr if you just turn up at the airport, but if you're over 26 this shoots up to 890kr to 1795kr return.
