The Inlandsbanan (Inland Railway; tel 020/53 53 53, www.inlandsbanan.se ), linking central Sweden with Gallivare 1300km further north, is the most charismatic of Scandinavian rail routes, the trip everyone wants to make. Long under threat of closure, the line has now been privatized and looks like surviving for the moment, but only operates between late June and early August. InterRail pass holders under the age of 26 travel for free while those over 26 pay full fare. With a Scanrail Pass there is a 25 percent discount on individual journeys, but you do get a 25 percent discount off an Inland Railway Card which otherwise costs 700kr and which offers unlimited travel on the line for fourteen days. The full fare, travelling second class from Mora to Ostersund, a six-hour trip, costs from 209kr depending on the time of year, plus a 50kr seat reservation. Cunning timetabling on the single daily service allows unlimited breaks on your journey but enforces a stop at Ostersund whichever way you travel. A number of packages can be booked directly through the Inlandsbanan ( swedenbooking@gtsab.se ), including accommodation and a guide in English. These packages range from 3260kr to 4100kr depending on distance travelled.
