The west of Tenerife is largely defined by the colossal and ancient Teno mountains which encompass most of the island's northwest tip. The sheer sides of this range mean that the region's coastal towns have to squeeze into narrow flat areas, or spread up steep roads. The coastal road on the northern side of the mountains links several of the island's oldest towns, including Icod de Los Vinos , home of the largest specimen of the endemic dragon tree, and the quaint formerly bustling harbour town of Garachico . The impressive bleak peaks of the Teno rise from here and in their midst lies the remote village of Masca in a stunning precipitous valley of the same name. The trail to the sea from here is one of the most impressive on the island and ends at a beach surrounded by staggeringly huge cliffs, the Acantilados de Los Gigantes or Cliffs of the Giants, after which the modest neighbouring resort of Los Gigantes has been named. Connected to Los Gigantes are two other coastal resorts, Puerto de Santiago and Playa de la Arena , the last major towns between here and Playa de Las Americas. The coast south of them is dominated by farming and fishing, though occasional small resort developments have begun to take hold.
