Two small areas of tall, thin and smooth, rock columns, the Paisaje Lunar , located 9km east of Vilaflor, form the highlight of a good two- to three-hour hike. The dirt road to the trailhead is marked by a wooden sign on a bend in the road to the Parque Nacional del Teide not far above Vilaflor. From here it's a two-hour walk, or half-hour drive to the trail proper. Note that this dirt road is a rough one and will give your car a good workout - so, if you're in a rental car, you may want to look at the small print first to see if your insurance covers you for this. Marked by white-painted rocks, the hike begins on a narrow woodland trail, but the trees soon thin out to reveal good views of Tenerife's southern coast 17km below and the outside of the ridge-like rim of the vast Las Canadas crater 2km above . In about an hour you should arrive at the first of the columns, eroded stone whose wide bases support tapering pillars with delicate looking, top-heavy tips. At the nearby second group of columns, green-painted rock markers lead you along the uphill trail to the black lunar-style landscape of the Barranco de Las Arenas then back to the start of a downhill trail which briefly follows the course of some water-pipes before bearing left to cross an area of volcanic ash. The white trail-markings, irregularly spaced along this stretch, resume beyond here and the path leads down to a children's summer camp and the dirt road back to Vilaflor.
