Mon-Fri 10am-5pm, Sat & Sun by appointment; ?6, under-12s and students free; www.iter.rcanaira.es. The land immediately east of El Medano and Montana Pelada has been designated for industrial use, with huge, empty roads laid in anticipation of as yet unrealized demand. For visitors, this area is only of interest for the innovative wind farm and renewable energy centre, the Parque Eolico - follow signs from the motorway for the Granadilla industrial area ( Pol. Industrial Granadilla ). The centre offers visitors informal and insightful tours (1hr 30min) that include a short film on the reaons aganstusig fossil fuels and trip along an ecological walkway lined with exhibits demonstrating principles behind solar and wind power at both domestic and industrial scales. The island government has sponsored the institute's research and provided subsidies to ecologically responsible households as part of its commitment to reduce global carbon dioxide emissions. The hope is that this wind farm will provide around 16 per cent of the island's energy needs, but ultimately the centre acknowledges that large wind farms are a rather unwieldy form of harnessing energy on a large scale and that this is best done on the household level. To illustrate possible methods of doing this, 25 "bioclimatic dwellings", using and producing energy in the most efficient and sensible manner, are planned on the site and should make visiting the centre more interesting, as will the planned visitors' centre.
