Busy San Eugenio flanks central Las Americas' northern side. Despite having a large commercial centre, the CC San Eugenio , and a harbour, Puerto Colon , the resort is short of a good beach - the small Playa La Pinta is a miserably crowded little cove surrounded by restaurants and by the harbour which obscures views out to sea. These shortcomings are partly compensated for by the presence of the Octopus Aquapark ( Daily 10am-6pm; ?13, under-14s ?8, sun beds and lockers ?1.50 each; tel 922/715 266; free buses from marked stops along the seafront road in Las Americas and near the bus station in Los Cristianos), a waterpark 1km inland and a good substitute for a beach. Sporting the usual array of pools, slides, islands, bridges and waterfalls the aquapark also puts on two daily dolphin shows . The complex is smaller than the ubiquitous advertising might suggest, so in high season it's best visited on Tuesdays or Fridays, the main flight days, when many holiday-makers are busy travelling - and avoided at weekends, when large numbers of local school kids often take over. The park's couple of cafes and bars are overpriced, so packing a lunch is a good idea. Try to remember regular doses of sunscreen when playing on the slides - many forget and fry. San Eugenio's the small attractive marina, Puerto Colon is a relatively recent addition to the area and one that has spruced up its image. The port's busy commercial centre is crowded with businesses and agencies organizing a range of boat trips from here and the harbour at Los Cristianos on a range of boats, including old wooden vessels and luxury yachts, glass-bottomed catamarans and so-called "booze cruises". Most trips head out to look for dolphins in the channel between Tenerife and La Gomera, or head north along the coast to the imposing cliffs of Los Gigantes, usually stopping for a swim and a snorkel along the way with sometimes a meal included. Typically, a two-hour trip will cost around ?12 per person, a five-hour trip around ?30. Some boats offer deep-sea fishing trips, starting from around ?48 per person for a five-hour trip.
