The region's most refreshingly low-key attraction is Bananera an adapted family farm near Buzanada around which tours are conducted to give a good introduction to Tenerife's agriculture. There's nothing particularly exciting about the farm, so your enjoyment of your visit will depend for a large part on the input of your guide. Each tour lasts around an hour and starts and finishes with a free shot of liqueur. As you'd expect from the attraction's name, the banana features heavily on the tour, as do explanations of the problems associated with its cultivation. Banana trees are thirsty plants, each consuming about one hundred litres of water each month. Given the island's dearth of naturally available fresh water, Tenerife's system of underground aquifers, which together span 1600km and are explained using scale models of the island in cross-section, is an essential but dwindling reserve. Desalination plants will secure most of the water in the future, though this will price water beyond the realms of economical agriculture, a problem that is at the heart of the banana industry's future on the island, and one that is discussed along with other problems, such as the EU's ban on its export (it's too small) and its unappetising black spots (hence its nickname, El Tigre). Tours finish with a look at a number of endemic species of non-cultivated plants grown in the farm's gardens, which also produce some of the ingredients used in the good-value set meals offered in the restaurant , open daily from noon to 4pm.
