More promising than Playa de Torviscas is Playa de Fanabe , flanking the classier resort area of the same name. Most of the beach is still under construction, though some sections have already been populated by sun loungers and tropical-style thatched shades. Fanabe itself is emerging as the smartest resort in Las Americas, but is still rather dull, partly because many hotels here are yet to be completed. Building work is particularly rampant on the northern fringes of Costa Adeje a resort based around a large golf course that seeks to differentiate itself from the sprawl of Las Americas in an effort to create a more upmarket area attracting high-spending golfers. The impressive Gran Hotel Melia Bahia del Duque is to be found here and by virtue of its lavish decor and extravagant architecture has developed into something of a tourist attraction. The hotel makes the most of the island's heritage - its buildings are all copies of nineteenth-century houses on the island and employees are required to wear traditional costume, which gives the place the rather odd feel of a living museum. Visitors are welcome to wander around the complex from 6.30pm onwards and though regulations stipulate a smart dress code, you should have no trouble getting in as long as you're not wearing shorts.
