The steep slopes of the massive Pico del Teide (3718m), one of the highest volcanoes in the world, rise from the flat Las Canadas plains to form one of the most enduring symbols of the island. It has long been an irresistible pilgrimage for thousands of visitors and the need for its protection was pivotal in encouraging the creation of the surrounding national park. Most visitors use the cable car to ascend, but for the determined few, the intensely gruelling hike up via Montana Blanca offers a satisfying and relatively quiet alternative. Access to the summit of Teide is by permit only.
