Hiking In The Park
Despite being restricted to a few established routes, hikers will find plenty of good trails of massively varying difficulty in the park. Though the visitors' centre at the eastern end of the park - and numerous private operators - can arrange guided hikes, most visitors strike out alone. Even on hikes near the park's heavily visited areas you quickly leave any crowds behind. The best short hike in the area loops around the varied and engaging rock formations around Los Roques de Garcia . The ascent of nearby Guajara is equally rewarding for its views over the park. Though much more strenuous, the obvious challenge for fit ambitious visitors is the ascent of Teide , from the summit of which you can see the entire archipelago. Bear climate in mind if you are planning to make any of these hikes. Though the high altitude makes the park relatively chilly, the absence of cloud and shade make sunscreen and plenty of water essential. The altitude also means there are lower concentrations of oxygen here. On most hikes you're unlikely to notice this, though you'll get out of breath more easily and end up walking more slowly, but on ascents of Teide, mild altitude sickness , in the form of a headache or dizziness, is common. Slowing the pace is usually enough to solve such problems but if this doesn't work then making your descent is the best option.
