Thanks to Atlantic trade winds regularly clouding the skies above the damp lush valleys of northern La Gomera, these are the most fertile areas of the island. Bananas are still grown in large quantities, particularly in Hermigua , and most of the tiny population on this side of the island is involved in agriculture. Despite the picturesque nature of valleys here, the lack of reliable sunshine has kept tourism to a minimum. The north only plays host to a few hikers , enjoying hikes along the steep cliffs of the coastline, particularly around Vallehermoso , not minding that the sea off the north's small pebble beaches is generally too dangerous to allow bathing.
