La Gomera Getting There and Getting Around

Getting There and Getting Around

For a laid-back holiday "away from it all", consider renting on the island's casas rurales - refurbished former farmhouses. Available by the week (from ?200), they need to be booked in advance, which is best done by calling central reservations on tel 922/144 101.

As yet, there are no regular services to La Gomera's new domestic airport, so most locals and travellers alike find there way to San Sebastian, the island's capital, on the frequent, daily ferry service from Los Cristianos in Tenerife - some of these ferries also go on to La Palma and El Hierro.

The island is served by three public bus services , which leave from the ferry terminal with an additional stop at the bus station on Via de Ronda. The first heads up to Valle Gran Rey via Chipude (Linea #1; 2-4 daily; 1hr 40min; ?4), the second runs to Playa de Santiago (Linea #2; 2-4 daily; 1hr 10min; ?4), and the third goes to Vallehermosa via Hermigua (Linea #3; 2-4 daily; 1hr 30min; ?3.5).

Though the bus network is neither extensive nor services frequent, the buses are not only a good and inexpensive way of getting around, but also the most practical way of making a hiking tour of the island. In acknowledgement of this useful service, bus drivers are happy to stop anywhere en route to drop passengers off, though they will usually only pick up from recognized stops. To fill in where and when buses don't run, taxis are a useful and relatively affordable alternative for those travelling in groups - fares from San Sebastian to Valle Gran Rey are around ?36; to

Vallehermoso ?24; to Hermigua ?18.

For more leisurely touring, the rental car is the most practical and affordable option and there are several rental companies in San Sebastian, Playa de Santiago and Valle Gran Rey. Some even have a couple of branches and allow one way rentals at no extra charge. Charges start from around ?25 per day, including unlimited mileage and full insurance. In Valle Gran Rey mountain bikes, scooters and motorbikes can also be rented.
