Post
The postal system in the Canary Islands is quite slow, and it usually takes at least ten days for a postcard or letter to reach the UK or mainland Europe (outside Spain). As well as the post offices, most of the shops selling postcards will also be able to sell you stamps ( segells ). A letter or card up to 20g in weight is charged at ?0.42 to EU destinations, ?0.70 outside. A full list of rates, including those for registered mail ( certificado ), and the express mail ( urgente ) service can be found at www.correos.es . Most post offices are open Mon-Fri 8.30am-2.30pm & Sat 9.30am-1pm. Other useful facilities offered by some post offices include a fax service (both sending and receiving) and a poste restante service. Mail using the latter should be clearly marked with your surname in capital letters and underlined, followed by your first name, and addressed to "Lista de Correos", with the town, postcode and island name to which you want the parcel sent. Unless specified otherwise, the parcel will then be sent to the given town's main post office, where it will be held for a maximum of three weeks. American Express also offers a poste restante service for card or cheque holders with its representatives in Santa Cruz and Los Americas. A passport or identity card must always be shown to pick up any mail.
