Drinking
Although the island's tap water is safe to drink, it's often heavily chlorinated and unpalatable, making the inexpensive agua mineral (mineral water), that comes either sparkling ( con gas ) or still ( sin gas ), a worthwhile investment. Bars, restaurants and many cafes serve alcohol . The most popular drink is generally light beer , usually lager, served in bottles ( cerveza ) or on tap ( cana is a small beer, jarra a larger measure - generally 400ml). The most popular local brewery is Dorada, who recently began brewing the distinctive Volcan, which is brewed using gofio . It's also worth sampling the local wine . Famous in the sixteenth century for its sweet heavy malmsey ( malvaiser ), Tenerife has re-established itself as a producer of respected dry white wines, having introduced new grapes to the island in the mid-1980s. Wines from the Tacoronte area are considered the best developed - try the Vina Norte , characterized by its strong character and fruity flavour; while wines of El Sauzal, like the Vinatigo , are known for their crisp, dry freshness. Another distinctively local drink is the Gomeran liqueur Gomeron - a mix of white rum and locally produced palm honey ( Miel de Palma ) - the result of a lengthy bleeding and boiling process that results in a sweet dark treacle.
