Health and Insurance
Tenerife is home to numerous medical facilities and English-speaking doctors and dentists (and even some pharmacists), keeping the hassle of seeking medical attention on the island to a minimum. For minor complaints go to a pharmacy ( farmacia ). You'll find one in virtually every village, marked by a large green cross and open during normal shop hours (Mon-Fri 9am-1pm & 4pm-8pm, Sat 9am-1pm). Additionally, pharmacies in each area have a rota to provide 24-hour emergency cover, details of which are usually posted on any pharmacy door. Pharmacists are highly trained and able to dispense many drugs available only on prescription in many other countries. In more serious cases you can get the address of an English-speaking doctor or dentist from your embassy or consulate, or with luck from a farmacia , the local police or tourist information. emergency call 061 for an amublance The Cruz Roja (Red Cross) runs a national ambulance service, and numbers for local branches are usually given in a blue square on the information sheet in public telephones; alternatively call 061. If an emergency arises as the result of an accident with someone else the police also need to be informed. In most cases ambulances will take you to one of the island's major hospitals - in Santa Cruz, La Orotava or Playa de Las Americas.
