Books
Of the rather limited collection of books on the Canary islands, few are wholly specific to Tenerife or La Gomera and even fewer have been translated into English. A good place to search for Spanish language books is on the Web site of Interbook ( www.disbumad.es ), a major Spanish online bookstore, offering over a million titles. For English language titles, most high-street booksellers should be able to help with the titles , but if you are having difficulty finding a title, or are looking for something quite specific, try contacting Books on Spain, PO Box 207, Twickenham TW2 5BQ, UK (tel 020/8890 7789; www.books-on-spain.com ), an excellent source of new used and out of print books. John Mercer , The Canary Islanders: Their prehistory, conquest and survival (Collins). Readable well-researched history of the Guanches and their introduction into Castilian society - though having fallen slightly out of date in the light of recent archeological finds. Felipe Fernandez-Armesto , The Canary Islands after the conquest: The making of a colonial society in the early sixteenth century (Clarendon Press). Thorough history of the development of the islands and the problems and issues the colony faced. Carole Stewart , Self-catering in Spain, the Balearics and the Canary Islands (Croom Helm). Good handbook for all those seeking to explore Spanish and Canarian cuisine to the fullest - with recipes and shopping advice for self-caterers. Tony Clarke and David Collins , A Birdwatchers' Guide to the Canary Islands (Perry). Definitive guide for twitchers visiting the Canaries. Philip Ashmole , Natural history excursions in Tenerife (Kidston Mill Press). Detailed coverage of the island's flora and fauna, though poorly illustrated. Includes a number of recommended excursions and talks you through what you're likely to see on the way.
