Climbing
Climbers visiting Tenerife looking for good rock will find over a hundred climbing routes on a marvellous rough rock-climbing medium - with lots of pinch grips, pockets and incut edges. And while few routes are of international quality, the island's fair weather nevertheless makes it a worthwhile winter destination. Some of the best climbs are in Las Canadas, in the Parque Nacional del Teide, particularly around Los Roques - and the nearby La Catedral is the island's main traditional climbing area. The smooth open faces of a quarry-like gorge near Arico also contain interest and problems, though there are easier routes here too. The only climbing shop on the island is Na Maste, C/Maquinez 15, Puerto de la Cruz - opposite Futuro Parque Maritimo. As this is remote from the climbing areas, climbers should aim to be self-sufficient in their equipment needs before they arrive on the island. The recently revised climbing guide : Rock Climbs in Majorca, Ibiza and Tenerife by Chris Craggs (Cicerone Press) should also be considered an essential part of your luggage.
